The ever-important capital of Nepal, bustling with nearly 1.5 million people in the city proper, Kathmandu surprises travelers with a mystical old world feel unusual in such a large Asian city. Streets are bursting with color, from elaborately painted buses, bikes, and rickshaws, to alley walls and doorways thickly painted in chipping but eye-popping primary colors, to the brilliant and colorful smiles of the people themselves. The flavorful dishes and clouds of incense overwhelm the senses as the city firmly plants itself in the hearts of those who travel in it.
Often a launching point to popular tourist destinations, such as the famed Himalayan treks to the north and Chitwan National Park to the south, Kathmandu offers an exotic respite and hot showers for those coming out of the high mountains, dusty plains, and steamy jungles in more remote locations as well. There is nothing quite like exploring the city and enjoying a fresh plate of momo’s after a long dusty trip to the end of the road!
